Physical vs digital vs OEM licences
Physical licence
Delivered as a physical product, such as a box, card or media, with the licence key. Suitable when you need a physical record for audits or asset registers.
Digital licence
Delivered electronically, usually as a licence key and download instructions by email. It is faster to receive, and no physical item is shipped.
OEM licence
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) licences are intended to be used with a specific device and are generally tied to that hardware. They are often chosen with a new server or PC. Key OEM terms:
- Hardware binding: generally supplied with specific hardware and may be permanently associated with the original device.
- Transfer: may not be transferable to another computer or device, unless the manufacturer's licensing terms expressly permit it.
- Activation: you provide accurate hardware and system information for activation, and the manufacturer's activation and usage requirements apply.
- Support and warranty: upgrades, activation help and technical support follow the manufacturer's policies.
- Documentation: product keys, activation details, invoices and licence documentation are provided where applicable.
- Refunds and replacements: subject to the manufacturer's policies and applicable consumer protection laws.

- User CALs or Device CALs, depending on how your staff and devices connect
